everything i loved in march
Spring is here and I have the will to live again! I spent today reading The Odyssey in the sun and working on my book with my friends. I’m approaching the final round of edits with my beta readers and am feeling scared and excited in equal measure. My book is inching closer and closer to being out in the real world with every passing day. March really did feel like crossing a threshold. Things are going to feel lighter from here on out. Here is a list of everything I loved in the past month.
Books:
Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico - Millennial ennui, expat dread, and the hellish allure of Scandinavian-style decor. I have spent a good chunk of my 20s living abroad and don’t intend to stop anytime soon, so I found this book particularly incisive, a necessary mirror. Perfectly captures the feeling that no matter where you go in the world, you just missed the boat on it being authentically cool.
The Saint of Heartbreak by Morgan Dante - Judas and the Devil fall in love in Hell. This book gutted me and then stitched me back together again. Occasionally I read something that feels like a genuine revelation and this was one of those times. I don’t want to say too much, you just have to read it for yourself and become completely enamored with this love story between two of the world’s greatest villains. Make sure to check the author’s website for triggers before reading.
Coyote Ugly (dir. David McNally) - Everything about this film spoke to me on a spiritual level. The outfits. The music. The atmosphere of pre-9/11 NYC. I fear being a coyote is my new dream job.
Labyrinth (dir. Jim Henson) - There is no more perfect film configuration than mostly puppets but also David Bowie is there.
Music:
The Giver by Chappell Roan - I’m so happy to not have to listen to a bootleg of the SNL performance anymore.
300 Dreams by After - Been playing this at the bookshop and living out my “main character in a 90s romcom” dreams.
Reach Out and Kiss Me by Love Spells - Beautiful melancholic indie. Reminds me a lot of Mazzy Star.
The Silence and the Storm by Vesna and Lor - Lor is one of my favorite bands I discovered this year, a Polish girl group for fans of The Last Dinner Party.
Misc:
A trip to the Isle of Skye - I started the month up in the Isle of Skye, enjoying some whisky and beautiful mountains. Some highlights, beside all the natural beauty, include Birch Coffee, a specialty cafe with homemade pastries in Portree, and The Oyster Shed, a literal shed on a hillside serving oysters and fried seafood in the way God intended.
This pink two-volume set of Le Morte d’Arthur - Everything about this design makes me so happy.
Brunch at Chorrito - Chorrito has started doing their Chilaquiles brunch every Sunday and it’s just as incredible as it looks. This is going to become a monthly staple for me.
Lunch at Tipo - Had a lovely, very pink lunch at Tipo. Unpictured: the amazing Cacio e pepe we ordered. Pictured: every dessert on offer.
In case you missed it:
A poem I wrote about a girl turning into a werewolf.
